Records, 1784-1888, 1912, 1917, some written in German, documenting efforts to encourage German settlement in upcountry Pickens District, S.C., in areas known as the High Falls (now in Oconee County, S.C.), and the West Union tracts. Correspondence, receipts, and plats, surveys, deeds, and other land and legal papers, some written in German, document legalities and process of settlement. Topics addressed include sale of land, building of roads, birdges, and other public works, digging of wells, owners of town lots, and construction of houses in Walhalla, S.C., area during mid-nineteenth century. Persons represented include Thode family, and trustees of the Society, Christopher F. Seeba, John A. Wagener, Claus Bullwinkel, John C. Henckel, and Jacob Schroder, who purchased land in 1849 from Joseph Grisham; eighteenth-century land papers include grants and annexed plats for lands originally owned by Thomas Gadsden, John F. Grimke, Isaac Harleston, Charles Cotesworth Pinkney, and other residents of the lowcountry.
